Google cares about duplicate content. Matt Cutts (one of Google’s early stage engineers) points out in this interview that Google, MSN, and Yahoo have adopted a new tag that allows site administrators to more easily delineate original content (I encourage you to listen to the full 3 minute, 18 second interview).

Looking past Cutts’ technical points in the interview, what’s important for you to note is that Google is all about eliminating duplicate content. This is because Google’s value proposition and revenue model depend on ensuring accurate and relevant organic search results. If  Google’s search results included gobs of duplicate content, the veracity of its algorithm would be called into question; thus, hitting at the core of its business.

Similarly, avoiding duplicate content is especially important for bloggers. Blogs naturally rank high in search engines because they give search engines the “food” they crave: fresh, relevant, and niche-oriented content. But bloggers sometimes inadvertently stumble into the Google penalty box by not linking correctly or by quoting whole blocks of text in the main body of the post. When this happens Google can, and many times will, significantly lower the ranking of the particular blog post.

Luckily, LeadingRE members who’ve signed up for the Propopoly® blogging platform have the Propopoly® team checking their blog posts for duplicate content, thus, increasing the odds that each post will rank high in Google and other search engines.
